What is Costuming?

Costuming in the SCA involves creating and wearing clothing and accessories inspired by historical periods, primarily the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It’s more than just wearing a costume; it’s about immersing yourself in the history and culture of the past through the art of clothing. SCA costumers strive for historical accuracy, using authentic materials and techniques to recreate the look and feel of period clothing.

Research

Research is a crucial part of the SCA costuming experience. Costumers spend countless hours researching historical fashion plates, surviving garments, and period literature to understand the styles, fabrics, and construction techniques of the past. This research helps to ensure that their creations are historically accurate and authentic.

Materials

SCA costumers use a wide variety of materials, including:

  • Natural Fibers: Linen, wool, cotton, silk, and leather.
  • Historical Dyes: Natural dyes made from plants, minerals, and insects.
  • Hand-spun and Hand-woven Fabrics: Many costumers spin their own yarn and weave their own fabrics, adding an extra layer of authenticity to their garments.
  • Hardware: Historically appropriate findings, such as buckles, buttons, and clasps.

Getting Started

If you’re interested in getting started with SCA costuming, the best place to begin is by attending an event. You’ll find experienced costumers who can answer your questions, offer advice, and share their knowledge. Many local groups offer costuming classes and workshops, providing an opportunity to learn basic sewing skills and explore different historical styles.
