What is Dancing in the SCA?

Dancing in the SCA recreates the vibrant dance traditions of medieval and renaissance Europe. This includes a wide variety of dances, from lively folk dances to elegant court dances. Period dances were often social events, providing opportunities for courtship, entertainment, and community building.

Research

Research plays a crucial role in SCA dancing. Dancers study historical dance manuals, analyze surviving artwork, and consult with experts to understand the choreography, music, and social context of period dances. This research helps to ensure that the dances are performed authentically and with a deep understanding of their historical significance.

Getting Started

If you’re interested in learning to dance in the West Kingdom, the best place to start is by attending a local dance practice. Many groups offer regular dance practices where experienced dancers can teach you the basic steps and more complex figures.
