What are Fiber Arts?

Fiber Arts in the SCA encompasses a wide range of textile-related crafts, including spinning, weaving, dyeing, embroidery, and more. These crafts were essential to daily life for people in the medieval and Renaissance world, providing clothing, shelter, and decorative items. SCA fiber artists strive to recreate these traditional skills using historical techniques and materials.

Research

Research is fundamental to SCA fiber arts. Artists delve into historical texts, examine surviving artifacts, and experiment with period-appropriate techniques to understand the methods and materials used by their ancestors. This research not only informs their craft but also deepens their appreciation for the history and cultural significance of these traditional skills.

Materials

SCA fiber artists often use historically appropriate materials, such as:

  • Natural Fibers: Wool, linen, cotton, silk, and flax.
  • Natural Dyes: Plants, minerals, and insects are used to create vibrant and historically accurate colors.
  • Hand-spun Yarn: Many artists spin their own yarn using hand spindles or spinning wheels.
  • Hand-woven Fabrics: Weavers use looms to create a variety of fabrics, from simple linens to intricate tapestries.
