What is Pottery in the SCA?

Pottery in the SCA involves recreating the ancient art of making ceramic objects, from simple bowls and jugs to more elaborate decorative pieces. Participants learn traditional techniques, experiment with different clays and glazes, and strive to create pieces that reflect the styles and aesthetics of medieval and renaissance Europe.

Techniques

SCA potters explore a variety of techniques, including:

  • Hand-building: Creating pottery by hand, using techniques such as coil building, slab building, and pinch pots.
  • Wheel-throwing: Shaping clay on a potter’s wheel to create symmetrical forms.
  • Glazing: Applying glazes to the pottery before firing, resulting in vibrant colors and unique finishes.
  • Firing: Firing the pottery in kilns to harden and vitrify the clay.

Materials

SCA potters often use materials that were available in medieval and renaissance times, such as:

  • Local Clays: Sourcing clay from local deposits adds a unique character to each piece.
  • Natural Pigments: Using natural materials like iron oxide, copper carbonate, and cobalt to create a range of colors.
  • Wood-fired Kilns: Many potters build and use wood-fired kilns, which produce unique firing effects and contribute to the historical authenticity of their work.
