What is Armored Combat?

In the SCA, we practice a form of armored combat that resembles medieval foot tournaments. Fighters wear real armor made of metal, leather, padded fabric and/or (disguised) hard plastic. However, instead of using steel weapons, we use weapons made of rattan wrapped with strapping or duct tape.

More experienced fighters train new fighters at practices. During training, combatants learn how to use their weapons, how to defend against an opponent, and how to gauge blows received during a fight. Using the honor system, each fighter must determine if a blow is sufficient to “wound” or “kill.” Before fighting in a tournament or war, combatants must be authorized by a marshal. The marshal will make sure that the fighter knows and abides by the rules of combat to ensure the safety of all combatants involved.

Tournaments

The West Kingdom hosts a variety of tournaments throughout the year, ranging from small local events to large regional tournaments. These events feature a range of fighting styles, including melee (war) and heavy weapons. Tournaments provide a competitive outlet for fighters, a chance to learn from experienced combatants, and an opportunity to showcase their skills and craftsmanship.

Melee (War)

Melee combat is the most popular form of fighting in the SCA. Teams of fighters, armed with swords, axes, poles, and shields, clash in a simulated battle for control of the field. Strategy, teamwork, and individual skill are all crucial for success in melee combat.
